The modular building, laid out in three lobes like an abstract representation of the local Hymenocallis flower, is situated on a tricycle-like footprint. The Y-shaped bracing plan has an essential role in lowering the stress on the crown of the structure. The ground is split up into a series of triangles, each of which has a concrete core and a perimeter.

The central core emerges from the top of tower and is ended with a spire that reaches over 700 feet (200 metres). The spire was built as the tower was raised gradually with hydraulic technology.
The base of the tower is supported by a mat of reinforced concrete that is 13 inches (3 feet) thick, itself supported by concrete piles 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter.

Exterior Design

The tower’s overall design was inspired by a local desert flower, the geometry of dissolving patterns, and the logistics of Islamic architecture. Constructed from reinforced concrete and clad with glass, the tower was structurally built upon a central buttress, which contains several volumes. The exterior cladding features aluminum and stainless-steel panels, vertical stainless-steel tubular fins, and more than 28,000 hand-cut glass panels.

The external cladding of Burj Khalifa began in June 2007 and was completed in August 2009.
